Imagine a world with no religion.

(BTW: John Lennon wasn’t the first person to suggest this…)

Got it?

Now, just for fun…

What laws could exist in a culture with no religion?

Let’s discuss it in the comments.

  1. No religion? Hmmm….I’m assuming there is still a creator since without “God” nothing would exist and the question would be moot.

Based on that condition, atheists would finally be free to ignore any rational thought about otology and epistemology, and would be able to live their unguided, meaningless, and purposeless life in peace.

    1. @Mel.
Exercising rational thought and critical thinking is generally what those who are currently believers/religious utilize that sees them inevitably deconvert and walk away from religion and god belief.

However, if you feel as if you are currently using these facilities at the moment how did you arrive at the conclusion that not only is the religion you follow correct and the god you believe in the right one but also that you have the right sect of Christianity?

    1. Apparently, English isn’t your first language.
Copy and paste the question into Google translate. You will still not comprehend the question but futility is more comfortable in your native tongue.

In your spare time, between trips upstairs to raid your parent’s refrigerator, you should have someone tutor you in the difference between thoughtfulness and cynicism. Any 5th grader should be able to help you.

If nature allows you to evolve a spine, feel free to make an actual statement in the comments. Otherwise, I wish you well on your journey through the primordial echo chambers of atheist thought.

  2. So you’re asking if natural selection would work as functional governing body?

Sure. The biggest, meanest primate in the oval office sits in the chair! Nuf’ said. (I might have opened a pervebial can of worms with that comment)

  3. I’ve just made the executive decision that pingbacks coming from the blog hosted by SpamBot “Arkenaten” will be sent to spam just like regular comments–unless/until “Arkenaten” can verify that his blog is ordered and meaningful. 🙂

      1. Good boy!
Your blog demonstrates there is at least some order and meaning in the Universe. (Language.)

Took a long time, but I’m proud of you. 🙂

          1. If he dies (which he will one way or another), do you think we can derive some sort of meaning from the event?

        1. Meaning from death?
Again I really do not understand what you are trying to suggest?

I don’t know the circumstances of why he is in his current state.
If for example he is the victim of a car accident are you implying there was a way to prevent such further accidents?

          1. Nah, nevermind.

I’m pretty sure you know what I’m asking, and you just don’t want to answer. I know you have a lot in common with my grandfather, and you’ve asked yourself this question before… (Any variation of: “Is there meaning in my life?” “Is there a reason to continue living, when we’re ultimately going to die and vanish?” “Is it really beneficial to keep a human on strong psych drugs for decades at a time?”)

He’s where both you and I will be some day.

(*edit: Except I’m not currently on strong psych drugs.)

          2. Once again, your comment is all over the place. You asked is there meaning to death.
            This makes no sense.
Ask a specific question and I shall try to answer it….

          3. Already asked several, Buddy. (At least three in the last comment.) You can’t answer them because you can’t copy and paste some sort of quote from the internet. They are philosophical and existential questions…

I don’t ACTUALLY expect you to answer. Just to think about them until the wee hours of the morning, when you finally take something to help you sleep.

          4. Again, your comment makes no sense.
If your grandfather dies surely the question you should ask is how can you as a family celebrate his life?

          5. The part about (your grandfather and) psyche drugs …
Is your main concern that there may be some sort of hereditary problem/risk involved?

          6. You already answered my question accidentally. You DO think there is some sort of meaning in my grandfather’s life worth “celebrating.”

So…now you just have to figure out why you think a warm sack of chemicals (who spent most of his adult life sedated) needs to be “celebrated.”

I think he was still created in God’s image, even though he rejected him and went crazy. So Grandpa is valuable, even though he can’t deal with these questions, just like you can’t.

          7. I have no knowledge of your grandfather, obviously.
I guess only you or your father could answer this question.
Is your main concern that his unfortunate condition is hereditary?
Do you think this was what caused your father’s problems, and specifically your problems?
I am going to presume that you have both consulted specialists over this at some point, yes? Just as a precaution.

          8. Hi, Amanda.
Have you considered intercessory prayer for your grandfather?
Your father could surely organize a large group among his various Christian audiences?
If he has already exercised this option for your grandad, let me know how it goes?
Or do you believe that because your grandad rejected your god, that prayer will not work?

          9. Yep–I’m not going to ask God to take away my grandpa’s free will. I will never ask Him to take away yours either. Both of you are welcome to be as self-righteous and crazy as you want.

          10. Sorry, is that a Yes, we are praying/will be praying intercessory) to your god, or is that a resounding No, we will not because your Gran’pa rejected your god?

          11. I’ve answered plainly. I will not be praying to The Creator, asking for him to take away my grandpa’s free will.

I don’t want the world full of robots who can’t make their own decisions. You and Grandpa should remain free to reject sanity.

Now, I will make no more comments on this thread.

          12. Ah , so you don’t really believe in any positive effects of intercessory prayer, am I understanding you correctly here?

It seems fairly obvious that your gran’pa cannot exercise any sort of free will in his current condition, surely you would agree with this?

However, it would make all the sense in the world that if your god had any interest at all in his well-being he certainly would not hold that condition over his head like some metaphorical Sword of Damocles. Which you seem to be doing in your own special way.

If he is omnipotent as you believe do you think he is a capricious as you are?

  4. How come humans survived for a long time without Christianity?

Homo Habilis were early humans and the first to make stone tools and the first to use a controlled fire about 2.8 million years ago and they lived in Africa for around 1.3 million years. They may have worshipped the sun and created the first religion, however I doubt it initially provided any sort of morals.

This is significant because these crude humans would have had the brain capacity to establish simple rules for the families and communities to ensure survival, just as all animals establish the hierarchy and roles of the members within their groups. Of course, we eventually evolved into Homo erectus that lived in Africa between 1–2 million years ago.

    1. The atheists’ creation story- evolution. As I keep saying, it offers no basis for morals, and in fact demands the strong kill the weak so that the fit may survive. And as this commenter has property stated, Darwin teaches the racist, white supremacist idea that the missing link between “civilized white man” and the African ape is the less evolved African man. We teach this garbage in public schools and then ask the kids not to be racist or even to bully the weak kids. But even after all of that, the Atheist zealots will stop by here and try to condemn the Bible for “condoning slavery. ”
      Sigh
      Roll eyes.
      Face palm.

      1. I believe in both evolution and Christianity. Just because we evolved, doesn’t mean we were void of God working through the evolutionary process. We will all be judged based on God’s rules, whether we know God or not, whether we know Christ or not. Religion is not the moral compass, God Himself is. He is the one who gives us our conscience and the plumb line of absolute truth. Religion or not, the same core laws make the same sense for the same reasons.

        1. Greetings Troy! Deciding to accept Christianity and evolution at the same time is a popular position these days, but it is both scientifically indefensible, as evolution fails on it’s own merits, and hypocritical because, as I have said above, it depends on bloodshed and has deep, racist roots. And because of all of the other ways it conflicts with the Bible. To see why Evolution fails scientifically, check out my series, “Defining evolution” here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9H1r9fw21g5wFlvJzY2imlSDVYrffOnu
and feel free to send me questions via email so we don’t clutter up JB’s blog here with a side topic. I’m always happy to help.

    2. Ensuring human survival is one thing, but how do you define everything else? Isn’t rape just making more babies and therefore continuing the human race? And shouldn’t we kill off the kids who make lower scores in school to ensure a better humankind tomorrow?

  5. “‘Where is God gone?’ he called out. ‘I mean to tell you! We have killed him, you and I! We are all his murderers! But how have we done it? How were we able to drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the whole horizon? What did we do when we loosened this earth from its sun? Whither does it now move? Whither do we move? Away from all suns? Do we not dash on unceasingly? Backwards, sideways, forwards, in all directions? Is there still an above and below? Do we not stray, as through infinite nothingness? …With what water could we cleanse ourselves? What lustrums, what sacred games shall we have to devise? Is not the magnitude of this deed too great for us? Shall we not ourselves have to become Gods, merely to seem worthy of it?” –Friedrich Nietzsche, The Mad Man (or “God is Dead”)

  6. It really wouldn’t make any sense to have rules. They would just “cramp our style.” Atheists always borrowed their morals from Christians, and then ditched the ones they don’t like.
