Few people have the audacity required to presume they know how God thinks.

It takes a guy with impudence.

It takes a guy with impertinence.

It takes a guy like me.

God doesn’t really explain why he made me.

All I have is this line in Genesis:

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.”

He already had a planet full of living things.

Living things that behave exactly the way He programmed them.

Apple trees grow apples.

Salmon return to their birthplace to spawn.

Spiders spin webs.

Everything does as God commands.

It is neat, orderly and predictable.

Then, God makes people.

We are not like trees, fish or spiders.

We are like God himself.

If we were trees, we could decide what fruit to grow.

If we were spiders, webs would be of infinite designs.

Emery, my youngest granddaughter, is one-year old.

I love to hold her ankles and hang her upside down.

Why?

Because it makes her laugh.

The sound of her laughter is the only reason for the activity.

I could search for a deeper, philosophical purpose but I don’t think I’ll find one.

Swinging by her ankles makes Emmi giggle.

That’s it.

And that’s why God made us.

He wants to hang us by our ankles and listen to us laugh.

  1. Love this. We so often miss this side of God’s character. This post in particular reminds me of N.D. Wilson’s writing; if you haven’t read it before I’d highly recommend “Death by Living”, he actually covers a lot of points you make here with very dry humour.

  2. God made me very happy yesterday when a friend told me there was a “Hawaii Pidgin” translation of the Bible on my YouVersion app.

““God wen get so plenny love an aloha fo da peopo inside da world, dat he wen send me, his one an ony Boy, so dat everybody dat trus me no get cut off from God, but get da real kine life dat stay to da max foeva. You know, God neva send me, his Boy, inside da world fo punish da peopo. He wen send me fo take da peopo outa da bad kine stuff dey doing. Whoeva stay trus me, God no goin punish dem. But whoeva no trus me, garans God goin punish dem, cuz dey neva trus me, Godʼs ony Boy.”

      1. BbBennett,

This is a real life sample of pidgin I found on YouTube for Tim to practice.

        and just for fun…

    1. BbBennett,

      Oh please. No. No.

I am very familiar with it. It is somewhat similar to the way folks talk out here… but even that is regional among the islands somewhat, and pidgin changes more than English over a shorter period of time. The pidgin speakers of today don’t understand the words I quiz them with from pidgin 32 years ago, when I was a teenager.

That, and the number of people who actually write in pidgin, like that, is miniscule. English is the language of business in Hawaii, though it is not uncommon to see signs in Japanese.

That, and everyone who speaks pidgin also speaks English.

That, and…. I really, really dislike translations and/or paraphrases that (at least in my mind) are hard to take serious by many. Like the Message. (Yeah, I went there)

That, and there is an actual Hawaiian language, which is a beautiful language, and thankfully preserved in some schools.

That, and they actually have Bibles using basic English to help folks with limited educations that do not appear silly.

But, these are my thoughts. Since God used a donkey (and uses a Dave) to get His message across, far be it from me to cast doubt upon “Da Pidgin Bible” sweeping the world in an evangelistic storm.

      1. Fear not!

I was just talking with my homeschool co-op buds Friday and one brought up that this translation was up in YouVersion. I didn’t believe her, but there it was!

I love dialects and entertained the gang with my rendition of Mark 5 and the casting out of demons into the swine.

Serious study was not on the agenda.

However it is interesting to think about how TRUTHS can be conveyed no matter how the Bible is translated.

      2. BbBennett,

One of the guys, who speaks pidgin, was given the book to read during a Sunday School at I church I used to attend when I lived on the other side of the island.

Listening to him read it was funny. We all laughed, him included. It was pretty funny stuff.

It would be pretty funny to hear Tim do it on Poddy break. I am a faithful listener.

        I like Star Wars.
