man and woman walking of body of water

I made a critique of Sheila Gregoire’s article about husbands who are “sold out for Jesus.” I suggested that husbands who are sold out to anything other than Jesus are idolators. So far, the only rebuttals (that I’ve seen) have been scolds for not linking to the original article. Fair enough. I will include links in future posts and tag Sheila in my comments.

My wife and I raised 4 children. Two of each possible gender. I made many mistakes but I didn’t make ONLY mistakes. By God’s grace I did a few things right. One of the things I did correctly was teach my kids (both boys and girls) how to test their beliefs. They learned to expect to be interrogated if Dad heard them utter a phrase like, “Men who seem “sold out for Jesus” often make the worst husbands, and are actually quite selfish and hurtful to those around them.”

If one of my beloved children made that statement, I would ask the following questions:

“Is it also true that women who are ‘sold out for Jesus’ often make the worst wives?”

“How do you know when a woman is prioritizing her ministry over Jesus?”

I would demand my kids answer these questions because forcing them to think is one of the ways I demonstrate my love for them. I can’t demand anything from you but I am curious to hear your answers. If you don’t want to do the hard work of defending your beliefs but still want to make a comment, just copy and paste this one:

“Well…you’re quite the self-righteous, condescending little wad, aren’t you?”

(Luke 9:62) Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

  1. Can you imagine what it really means to love your wife above all else, including God? It would be okay to rob banks and murder rich people with lots of money in their wallets so long as you give your ill-gotten gains to your wife.
