I woke up this morning because God saw fit to lend me consciousness for another day. I don’t have the strength, wisdom, or skill to rouse myself from sleep. All night long my lungs filled the blood in my veins with oxygen and my heart pumped that blood to every one of the trillions of cells that make up my physical body.
I woke up in a house full of good things. Comfortable furniture stays dry under a waterproof roof. The temperature is adjusted by vigilant machinery 24-hours a day so it’s never too hot or too cold regardless of the weather outside.
There are cupboards full of canned food. There’s a refrigerator in the kitchen that keeps non-canned food from spoiling. There’s a freezer in the basement stocked with beef. There’s pizza which will be ready to eat after a few minutes in the oven (also conveniently located in the kitchen).
My house is full of people. They annoy me greatly and bless me richly. I don’t have the strength, wisdom, or skill to bring any of them into my life. God assigned me these people because He knows I would never choose them. I’m too selfish and stupid.
And somehow, God equipped me with the ability to think, reason, and comprehend unseen reality. Any knowledge I possess is given to me by God. He grants me the breath I use to praise Him. Whatever truth I express should not be credited to me. I’m a guy who can’t even wake himself up.
We may disagree about how God made the universe but I have no doubt that He’s responsible. It’s important that I make that clear.
(Deuteronomy 6:10) “And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build, and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, then take care lest you forget the Lord…”

Amen and amen…..
Whenever we start taking credit for the things we have done, we need to remember all the things we did not do that made the few things we did do possible.
Thanks for the reminder.
