Don’t You Care About Pushing Me Away From Jesus?

When I say I want nothing to do with conceited, boastful, lovers of themselves who have a form of godliness but deny its power, some boastful, conceited, lover of self shows up and says, “People like you are the reason I am not a Christian anymore!” Then some people who identify as Christians burst into the conversation to affirm that the child of the Father of Lies is speaking truth.

The alleged Christian says something like: “John, you jerk! This gentle pagan is correct! Your interaction did nothing to bring anyone to saving grace!!!! All you did was push him to research harder on why Christians are wrong!!!!! The only thing these arguments accomplish, is ensuring that person will never come to Christ! That is something you will have to answer for when you stand before the King!!!”

You’re absolutely right. This interaction did not introduce anyone to saving grace. All you’ve done is confirm that Christians are ill-tempered. You don’t seem to be worried that your tone might be pushing me away from Jesus.

The easiest way to make sure you’re telling the truth is to apply all criticisms to yourself before you apply them to me (I’m assuming you care about telling the truth). If what you’re going to say to me is still correct when I say it back to you, then speak up. I’m always grateful to God when he sends wise council.

I am not taking responsibility for the stubborn skepticism of other people. It is the fool who rejects Jesus because Christians are imperfect. It is equally foolish to reprimand a brother because of the accusation of a fool.

(Matthew 7:2) For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
