To the charge of being prejudice I plead guilty. Assumptions and presuppositions color my perspective on every subject with which I am even slightly familiar. If I know anything at all about a topic, I’m prejudiced on it. I’m prejudiced against the flu, substance abuse, starvation, homelessness, armed robbery, bee stings, biting my tongue, and mayonnaise (to name just a few things).
Since I’m aware of my own prejudicial tendencies, I try to keep an open mind about the prejudices of others. I’m prejudiced about accommodating your prejudice. I fully expect that your opinion on the subject of Christians Nationalism (for example) will be chock full of biases. It seems that of the two of us, I am the only one confessing prejudice.
That’s fine. I’m quite accustomed to hypocrisy and emotional screeds do me no harm (sticks and stones and so on). But on the off (off, off, off, waaay off) chance that you are open to learning something, I’ll tell you how to dialogue with thoughtful people.
When saying something like, “What an awful take,” you ought to give some specific details as to what makes my take awful. I may indeed have a ‘false narrative’ but I’m not going to just take your word for it. I mean, you didn’t just take my word for it about Christian Nationalism. You need to explain what makes my narrative false.
This is also true for statements like, “Christian nationalism is poison to followers of Jesus AND people who believe in democracy.” I’m both a follower of Jesus and a person who believes in democracy. Neither of those things are incompatible with Christian nationalism the way I understand it but, again, I’m willing to hear your biased, prejudiced point of view. Jesus wants me to treat you the way I want to be treated. It would violate the Golden Rule to just respond to you with, “YIKES!”
Finally, Christians are prejudiced about Jesus Christ. The Bible strictly forbids us embracing other doctrines, creeds, philosophies, and religions. Jesus said He’s the only way to God. A person who claims to be pro-Jesus should enthusiastically support Christianity seeping into every aspect of American culture – or – stop claiming to be pro-Jesus.
(Exodus 20:16) You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
