“By the way John. Faiths or Gods of Love who have to threaten you with Eternal Torment for not agreeing with them or loving them back are not your friends.”

Wisdom From An Atheist – (Name Withheld)

This is an ancient idiocy that’s often repeated in pithy memes on the internet. There are many versions of this same sentiment and they’re all equally moronic:

I can’t let this crap keep circulating without speaking up. My conscience would bother me. While the majority of these memes are irrecoverably stupid, there is one (1) that gets close enough to the truth to be useful. Because I care about Truth, I encourage you god-mocking humanists to ditch the “eternal torment” memes in favor of this one. It’s the only meme you need:

Exactly right! Hell is full of people like you. In fact, Hell is nothing but you. It’s an eternity of you…and that’s all. No trace of God. You live on your terms. You have all authority. God won’t bother you ever again. You are free to bask forever in your own goodness. Create Utopia by the power of your word. Enjoy your perfect self forever. That’s what you wanted. Hell is not punishment…it’s your reward for not needing God.

Heaven is full of weak people. They can’t do anything without God’s help. They can’t create a drop of water, or a tree. They rely on God to take care of them. They’re all sheep, but you already know that. You’re much smarter than everyone in Heaven. You would be bored by their endless chatter about God’s goodness. Heaven is all about God. That would be Hell for you.

So stop whining about Hell being “punishment” and “damnation”. Hell is ALL you ALL the time. It’s forever with the smug satisfaction of knowing you were right! There is no God.

  1. This is a beautifully memorable post, John. Thank you. You, and your daughter, have quite a wonderful ministry here.

I keep thinking what an amazing pastor you would be, since your posts are what people, in the pews and those outside the gates who shake fists and jeer, need to hear. I see the wisdom in your being a stand up comedian, blogger and writer instead, yet having your own amazing pulpit.

Preach on, dear Brother! This is good and True.

  2. “You are free to bask forever in your own goodness. Create Utopia by the power of your word. Enjoy your perfect self forever.”

Best post of the year so far…

    1. The result of a rather tedious conversation with a God-denier. The value of these engagements is that sometimes God teaches me stuff while I’m banging my head against the wall trying to teach someone else. I just wish I knew when it was going to happen…

      1. I thought you read the Problem of Pain a long time ago?
“The gates of Hell are locked from the inside.” –C.S. Lewis

        1. You know how it is. I forget a lot of things until they’re pertinent to current conversation.

  3. Yes. Your Id, ego, and superego chatting it up with old Pitch. Then whaddya got!

  4. Wow. Very C. S. Lewis, whom I admire. But updated. Sadly, many lost don’t realize what a hell being utterly alone is (well … probably with your personal demons for company). They don’t understand how eternal loneliness is eternal punishment. Or what existence would be like without the presence of the Holy Spirit.

    1. I agree. That’s what it means to be “blind” to sin. The arrogance of Humanism is the sincere belief that we are sufficient for sustaining ourselves.
