I’ll assume you had good intentions when you shared this doozy: “The true test of Christianity isn’t just loving Jesus…It’s loving Judas.” You were trying to say that Christianity teaches love for everyone, including our enemies. You should have just said that instead of trying to be profound.

(John 14:23) Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.”

The true test of Christianity absolutely, without question, undeniably is just loving Jesus. Period. Full stop.

“John, you insufferable jerk!! Jesus commands us to love our enemies!!! Judas is my enemy!!! You stupid jerk!!!!!”

Judas is not your enemy. He’s been dead a long time. But even if Mr. Iscariot was alive and well, stealing money and betraying Jesus, you don’t have a clue how to go about ‘loving’ him.

Your horrendous meme conflates ‘loving Jesus’ and ‘loving Judas.’ When Jesus told you to love your enemies, he didn’t mean, “Have exactly the same regard for wicked people as you have for me.” Bad theology teaches that Judas gets the same love as Jesus. Your efforts to embrace Judas require denial of Christ. It is the denial of Jesus that makes a person your enemy in the first place.

There are Judas-type people living today but before you can obey Jesus’ command to love them, you need to understand what love is and THAT (I’m sorry to inform you) will require work. You’ll need to humbly search the scripture for the proper understanding. Biblical love is more than ambiguous feelings. You don’t get credit for being loving simply because you don’t hold a grudge against Judas. You are mistaking your apathy toward sinners for compassion.

Maybe start by learning what Jesus himself said about Judas…

“…But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.” – Mark 14:21

  1. John, Is it because that Judas Iscariot committed a blasphemy? That’s why it was better for him to never be born?
