pizza on brown wooden board

Have you ever wondered why the Bible isn’t just the book of Genesis?

I think (and I could certainly be wrong) it’s because Genesis doesn’t contain everything God wanted us to know. If Genesis was sufficient, God wouldn’t have given us the other 65 books.

Therefore (and I’m still speculating here) all 66 books are necessary to build a complete theology. In other words, Genesis and Deuteronomy are relevant to Matthew and 2nd Corinthians.

So it would be silly for me to say one particular passage of scripture has ‘nothing to do with’ another passage of scripture. At the very least, all scripture is God breathed (that’s not speculation, I got that from the Bible). Every verse of scripture has something in common with every other verse. They all reveal some truth about God.

Take, for example, 2 Peter 3:8 which reads, “But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” While it is correct to say that the context of this verse is not the creation narrative, you go too far when you say, “…the context has nothing to do with the days of creation.”

Imagine you ordered a pizza and when it was delivered, the delivery guy said, “Do not overlook this fact, he who made your pizza used his left hand to apply the toppings.” It would be fine to say, “I don’t care about that so long as the toppings are what I ordered.”

But it would be silly to say, “That has nothing to do with the creation of my pizza.” Every tiny piece of information about the guy who made your pizza is relevant to the creation of that pizza; including the details you don’t care about (and those that contradict your dogma).

If your goal is finding truth then you need to figure out how 2 Peter 3:8 fits with Genesis 1. As much as you may hate it, they are related somehow.

(2 Timothy 3:16) All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
