money envelope with american dollar banknotes on white surface

When I suggested that Christians should use some discernment when being charitable, a few people sent me passages from scripture to point out my error. According to these folks, it is inappropriate to judge the legitimacy of any request for assistance. The strongest rebuke of my position comes from Jesus himself!

“Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.” (Luke 6:30)

Pretty clear what that means.

Before I remove this verse from the context of scripture and make it the single guiding principle for managing my material resources, I need to ask those of you who cited this verse some questions. (Sorry! Clarifying questions are an old habit I just can’t seem to quit.)

Do you live by this commandment yourself? I assume you do since it would be hypocritical to quote scriptures to me that you don’t apply to yourself. Since I’m new to operating in this manner, I’m going to need practical advice from you who have embraced it as a lifestyle.

What do you do when you receive a call from a stranger asking for your credit card information? Does he also need to ask for your social security number or do you just voluntarily give it to him knowing he might need it?

When I see someone holding a cardboard sign asking for help and I don’t have any cash on me, should I find an atm and get cash or should I give that person my ATM card so they can get the cash themselves? Is there another option that is more Christ-like?

Do you ever just take things you need from other Christians? Do you quote them Luke 6:30 when they ask for their stuff back?

Can I leave the keys in my car with a note explaining that the title is in the glovebox or does Jesus intend for needy people to literally ask me to give them my vehicle?

I assume that using locks shows a lack of faith. No more locks on anything, right?

Finally, where should I go with my family after somebody asks me to give them our house?

While I appreciate the barrage of bible verses from fellow Christians, I’m embarrassed to admit that I’m not very good at applied theology. Your answers to these questions will help me grow in the faith.
