“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”
(James 1:5)
If you’re wondering whether or not you lack wisdom, answer these questions.
Would your rather ask God for something else? – The scripture talks a lot about the value of wisdom. It is way up near the top of the list of things that you’re supposed to pursue. According to God, it is better to be wise than to be rich. You definitely should ask God for wisdom if you’ve ever asked Him for anything else.
Are you not even sure what wisdom is? – Maybe you think ‘wisdom’ is just another word for ‘smart.’ You think your I.Q. is built into your DNA and it doesn’t change. You’re stuck with whatever you have and it’s a waste of time asking for more. You think wisdom is something that other people were born with and you’re destined to be ‘not very bright’ for the rest of your life. You should ask God to give you some wisdom so you’ll understand wisdom.
Are you afraid wisdom will make people hate you? – That’s a legitimate concern, especially if you spend a lot of time around foolish people. Scripture guarantees that everyone who hates understanding (and discipline) won’t be friendly toward you when you become wise. You should immediately ask God to give you insight about how to approach this dilemma.
Do you think wisdom won’t solve any problems? – You’re not confident that wisdom will fix whatever is keeping you awake at night. You worry about big, important issues that require taking ACTION. You believe it’s time to get busy and DO SOMETHING, not sit on the sidelines and pray. Your best course of action, right now, is to sit on the sidelines and ask God to tell you what to do.
Do you believe you’re already wise? – If you’ve already got some wisdom, then I bet you’re already asking for more. A little wisdom creates a hunger that is never satisfied. The more wisdom you get, the more you want. If you’re not hungry for wisdom, ask God to stir up your appetite.
Fools never detect foolishness. If you haven’t noticed the world is overrun with fools, then you are one of them. Don’t take another step! Stop what you’re doing and beg God for wisdom!
