For a large number of alleged Christians, The Great Commission has become, “Go into all the world and shrug.”

Christianity in America is mostly about being considerate toward other beliefs. Sure, those beliefs lead to chaos, suffering, and death but that doesn’t make it okay for us to talk bad about them! After all, it’s possible that we’re wrong about everything.

Think about the conceit of those Christians who believe they’ve ‘finally got the Bible right.’ They are so smug! That arrogance repels lost people from the saving power of uncertainty. After all, the apostles were renowned for accommodating the pagan ideologies they encountered because their minds were open to the possibility that their beliefs were mistaken. The Bible often warns about being overly confident in what we read in the Bible.

But…wait a second…that’s not true. Actually, Jesus himself spoke about the distastefulness of lukewarm people. He talked about the sin of double-mindedness and said the people who aren’t fully committed to discipleship don’t have a place in the Kingdom (Luke 9:62).

Besides, the people mocking us for ‘finally getting the bible right’ have no doubt that we still haven’t figured it out. In other words, they’re certain in their uncertainty. The statement that ‘uncertainty is okay’ is self refuting.

The basics of Christianity are not hard to understand. We can say with certainty that God created the universe. We can say, with certainty, that Jesus rose from the dead and faith in Him is the only way to enjoy fellowship with God.

(Hebrews 10:19) Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
