James Talarico is a politician who said this: “I believe Christianity points to the truth. I also think other religions of love point to the same truth… Jesus Christ reveals that reality to us, but I also think other traditions reveal that reality in their own ways. I’ve learned more about my tradition by learning more about Buddhism and Hinduism and Islam and Judaism.”
I believe James Talarico points to the truth. I also think his political opponents point to the same truth. It doesn’t really matter who gets elected. All politicians reveal the same truth in their own ways.
Take feeding the poor. Some people operate soup kitchens where volunteers hand out food to anyone who’s hungry. Other people create laws that put poor people in prison where the state guarantees three meals a day. Either way, the poor are getting fed.
Some politicians attempt to solve homelessness by building shelters and transitional housing. Others solve homelessness by banning camping and making vagrants move outside city limits. Both get homeless people off the streets.
Politics align on immigration too. One group believes in creating lawful pathways for people to enter the country and participate openly in the economy. Another group makes immigration difficult so foreigners live in constant fear of deportation while collecting the benefits of citizenship. The end result is the same.
And look at healthcare! Some politicians believe healthcare should be free. Other politicians believe people should pay for it. Either way, the healthcare itself doesn’t change. No matter which politician is in charge, the outcome is identical.
According to James, opposite policies, opposing philosophies, and completely incompatible solutions are just different ways of revealing the same truth. If you’re a voter who likes absurdity, Talarico is your man.
(John 14:6) Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
