lone pine tree growing on island surrounded by water

There’s a charity organization that I’ve worked with for quite awhile. Over the years, I’ve headlined several of their fundraising events and volunteered to teach some workshops on the subject of comedy. This is not specifically a ‘Christian’ organization but their mission is not in conflict with my values so my conscience isn’t bothered by our partnership.

The Charity contacted me to headline another fundraising event next Spring. After checking with my booking agent to make sure the date was open, I happily agreed to help them raise money for a good cause.

A day later, The Charity contacted me again to tell me that one of their board members visited my website, read some of my blog (uh-oh), and canceled my performance. I was not told specifically what upset the executive’s applecart but it had something to do with my views on LGBT issues.

Here’s what I want my fellow Christians to understand.

1st: My views haven’t changed. I held the same beliefs at every previous performance but since LGBT issues aren’t part of my act, everybody just thought I was hilarious. They didn’t know to be offended.

2nd: I’m not the bigot here. I knew The Charity was operated by people who weren’t Christians. I knew that we’d likely disagree about marriage, education, immigration, abortion, and of course — LGBT issues. Despite our philosophical differences, I agreed to be part of their program. The board member will undoubtedly get credit for standing up against hate and intolerance which is an irony that I will savor for many years.

3rd: Canceling me for my views reinforces those views. I want my worldview to be made of the strongest ideas. Strong ideas stand up to scrutiny and criticism. Weak ideas stand by removing strong ideas from the conversation. I won’t change my mind on an issue just because I’ve offended someone who lacks the courage and character to confront me.

4th: The whole organization shouldn’t suffer. I’ve withheld the name of The Charity because it’s not appropriate to hold the entire group accountable for the actions of a few hateful decision makers. The Charity is doing important work so I’m willing to put my personal grievances aside for the good of the cause. It seems I care more about their mission than their leadership team.

5th: (Acts 5:39) The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.

  1. Its the way it is in the world, past present and future. It’s the same demonic spirit i hear in the voices of people i know in Pakistan. If you are a Christian living there, you are immediately put on the do not help, do give a good paying job, second rate health care, list. It is in these moments we can really see the truth at work.
