Polling data collected by a polling data collection company has been used to create a colorful chart that indicates people are increasingly distrustful of colorful charts created from polling data.
“Nope,” said Melissa Quartz in response to the polling question, “Do you believe you’re being polled right now?” Quartz later clarified during an interview, “Anybody can draw boxes and lines on a sheet of paper. I’ll prove it. Take a gander at this polling data I made with a purple crayon.”
Polling companies are alarmed by the downward trend of public trust in their services. “The average person doesn’t understand the purpose of polls,” said Norbert Fields, a guy who draws boxes from polling data. “People expect polls to provide useful statistical information but that’s not what polls are meant to do. Polls predict the future but with surveys instead of a crystal ball. Think of a poll as a slightly less scientific horoscope.”
If the negative trend continues, polling companies expect nothing will change as political groups eagerly pay for their services despite the data proving to be mostly unreliable. “As we speak, we’re conducting a poll to find out how to regain people’s trust in polls,” Fields explained. “If the politicians ever lose confidence in us, we’ve got a spiffy pie-chart to show them!”
