One of the things keeping the church from having a positive affect on culture is Christians running around trying to unite everybody. Because they’re always living (at least) 20 years in the past, these saints believe there are millions of ‘lost sheep’ who were mistreated by the church and desperately seek to be included. If you’re someone who bears the burden of trying to bring the whole world together; you can lay that burden down.

Jesus literally told you that His mission was not unity.

(Matthew 10:34) “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn “ ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’

John describes how to treat people who aren’t believers (spoiler alert: it’s not with a friendly invitation to get coffee and chat).

(2 John 5:9) Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him.

Even though the Bible assures you that Christianity is an exclusive group with strict standards for membership, you’re convinced that the real message of our faith is, “Let’s just love everybody and get along.”

You apparently haven’t noticed that the people you’re trying to ‘love’ are spurning your affection. Nobody (absolutely nobody) is asking to be adopted into the ‘Evangelical’ family. Nobody likes you. The thing they most fear is being mistaken for a Christian. The only thing more repulsive to them than unity with Jesus is unity with YOU. They say it over and over. Why won’t you take the hint?

Don’t believe the belligerent anti-Christians who blame the Church for their unrighteousness. They didn’t give up the faith because you weren’t enough like Jesus. They gave up the faith because THEY don’t want to be like Jesus.

There will NEVER be reconciliation between the Jesus worshipers and the self-worshipers. Unity outside of Christ is impossible. You can’t bring darkness into fellowship with light. Darkness is always OVERCOME by light. So stop trying to put them on the same team.

  1. 2 Corinthians 6:14-16 KJV
[14] Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? [15] And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? [16] And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

  2. As a comedian, you are a public person, and I guess you run into more than just a little hostility. Kind of difficult not to respond in kind, particularly if you tend to see just one extreme or the other.

I would guess Christians treat you well since your humor is funny and appropriate.

John 13:34-35 New American Standard Bible
34 I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another.”

The Bible calls upon Christians to love each other in the expectation that we will return each other’s love. We are one in Christ Jesus. Unity is not the goal, and it is not our doing. It is simply a sign of success. The goal is to follow Christ Jesus.

    What about the other extreme?
The Bible also calls upon us to love our enemies, but that requirement doesn’t eliminate the need to recognize the obvious, our enemies are our enemies.

Check the context. I don’t think 2 John 5:9 applies to all unbelievers. 2 John 5:9 is referring to false teachers, people who have been taught the Gospel and perverted it. The Apostle John did not want Christians to assist apostates in spreading falsehoods. We are not supposed to assist foolish people in their evil deeds.

Most unbelievers are either indifferent to Christians or they fear being preached at by Jesus freaks.

That is why I think that in general Romans 12:14-21 probably provides more appropriate guidance.
Romans 12:14-21 New American Standard Bible
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17 Never repay evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all people. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all people. 19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written: “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Applying Romans 12:14-21 is difficult. Fortunately, it is not about unity. It is just about trying to be at peace with everyone. We cannot be peaceful with everyone, but we can try. Moreover, if we wish to convert non-Christians — save their souls — assuming the worst from them is a non-starter.
