How many nights have you spent wide awake, pondering the question, “Who will bridge the divide between atheists and the religious?” How many anguished hours have you fretted that the Bible might actually be correct and there is no common ground between good and evil?
Well, a guy who quit Christianity wrote a book about how to connect with Christians. It’s exactly what the church should be reading to accelerate our slide into cultural irrelevance. It’s hard to imagine a more efficient method of achieving insignificance than taking church growth advice from apostates.
This book purports itself to be, “…The story of a former Evangelical Christian turned openly gay atheist who now works to bridge the divide between atheists and the religious.” A book of similar importance would be the story of a vegan who now works to bridge the divide between vegetarians and barbeque restauranteurs. It’s like trying to find similarities between glaciers and wildfires.
“John, you jerk!!! What’s wrong with uniting people from different perspectives?!!! You are so hostile and unloving!!!!”
The book merely claims to be ‘a bridge’ between atheists and the religious. In order for those groups to be united, somebody has to cross the bridge. Somebody has to change sides. Although it sounds lovely to talk about ‘common ground,’ nobody actually wants to spend a lot of time standing in the middle of a bridge. Common ground is not a destination.
The division between saints and sinners was put there by God. It is not possible for mere mortals to bridge that gap. The only way to cross the abyss that separates people from God is Jesus Christ and He absolutely does not need help from any atheist. You don’t move closer to godlessness without moving farther from Jesus.
(Psalm 94:20) Can a corrupt throne be allied with you— one that brings on misery by its decrees? They band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. But the Lord has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.
