I think it’s good for humans to question their motives. If you disagree, I encourage you to not read any further. Everything beyond this paragraph will just upset you.
What is motivating you to post pictures of yourself with famous people? Why do you want celebrity autographs?
There are no neutral activities. Whatever you do is either pleasing the Spirit or pleasing your flesh. Your interactions with notorious, important, or influential people glorifies God, or glorifies you. This is not a new concept. The Bible told you to love your neighbor as yourself. You just don’t think of celebrities as neighbors.
I mean, you’ve never stood in line to shake hands with the guy next door, right? You didn’t take a selfie with the random lady at the grocery store. You’ve never posted to social media about seeing an anonymous stranger in a restaurant. But when you are in close proximity to a celebrity (who you’ve also never met) something tells you it’s an important event that needs to be announced and commemorated.
“John, you arrogant jerk!!! There’s nothing wrong with fandom! Why do you always turn everything into sin??!!”
This is why I told you not to read past the first paragraph. Introspection is a painful thing. Considering your motives will usually reveal that you’re not a good person.
You want a picture with the celebrity to elevate yourself. Your friends will envy you (some of them will literally say it). Your association with the celebrity is something that sets you apart. You don’t get that from the guy next door. The picture with the celebrity makes you a V.I.P. It allows you to leverage the celebrity’s fame to boost your status. In a very very very very small way, it makes YOU a celebrity.
As always, I could be wrong. It’s possible that God is exalted when you idolize a human. I am sincerely interested in hearing how Jesus gets the glory when you announce that you met a superstar.
(Galatians 6:6) Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
