Never trust a person who tells you they are “unbiased.” Any person who exited their mother’s womb more than a few hours ago has biases. A bias is a belief that prevents objective consideration of an issue or situation. Everybody has beliefs that prevent objectivity. Everybody is bias.

The reason a person will try to convince you she is “unbiased” is because biases are generally regarded as bad things. Biases are considered to be the opposite of “open mindedness.” Being “open minded” is generally regarded as a good thing. Guess what? Believing it is good to be open minded…is a bias.

Some biases are good and useful. Bias is why you don’t stick your face in pots of boiling water. Bias is why you look both ways before crossing the street. Bias is why you lock your car doors. Bias is why you don’t leave stacks of cash on your front lawn. A completely “open minded” person would be dead, broke, or both in a matter of hours.

A manipulative person wants to convince you that YOUR bias is bad so she can replace it with HER bias. When she urges you to “be open minded” what she means is: “Ditch your beliefs for mine.” She doesn’t really believe biases are bad but she needs you to believe YOUR biases are bad.

The scripture tells us that anyone in Christ is a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). What do you suppose that means? I think it means you get a fresh set of biases. It doesn’t happen immediately, but the longer you are indwelled with the Holy Spirit the more your biases swing toward truth. After many years of discipleship, your biases, preconceptions, assumptions, and instincts match those of Jesus himself. That was the whole point of following Jesus, wasn’t it? To become more like Him?

It stands to reason that the more your biases reflect Jesus, the more you’re going to upset wicked people. Wicked people want to conform your mind to their will. The Holy Spirit makes that impossible. That’s when those who hate God (and you) will urge you to be “unbiased” and “open minded.”

Don’t fall for it.

There are no unbiased, open-minded people. There are only saints and sinners. There are only God’s children, and fools. The difference between the two groups, is how they’re biased.

So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

  1. You challenge me. I’m not entirely sure I like that some days. Thank you.

Brenda… Of the scared of everything-minded…

  2. Bravo, John!

My Political Science Prof. during Watergate said, “Anyone who is open-minded will eventually have no mind left (w/ visual comedy of their brains falling out).”
He was fantastic and taught us how to distrust politicians and media, spot manipulation, propaganda, be discerning, follow the money, learn the difference between true journalism and paid hacks… he also taught us how important it was to laugh. He would have loved having you as one of his “kids”.

I deeply appreciate your work (and biases).
You have a very unique set of skills that challenge the wicked and encourage your Brethren.
You, and Team Branyan, make a difference in this world! Thank you!
    ….of course I’m biased…
