Every now and then the Spirit urges me to remind my fellow believers that there is no reason to censor comments that contradict scripture. We should not be afraid of the dark.

I know you think you’re doing a good thing when you delete stuff that doesn’t line up with your theology. You believe you’re ‘protecting the truth’ or ‘defending the faith.’ Although you would never say this, you think God needs you to silence false teachers.

But (you might want to sit down for this…) He doesn’t.

The Bible tells us that we will encounter bad theology on a regular basis. It seems that God has chosen not to silence false teachers. Instead, He expects us to use the tools He has provided to expose falsehood.

Censorship is only necessary when you’re in a position of weakness. When your ideas are bad, you must remove better ideas from consideration. Any fool can use the delete key. Jesus Christ declared that he IS the Truth. He has won the war against falsehood. You don’t need to censor lies because you can RESPOND to them. If you have the Truth, you should use it to dismantle errors.

“John, you jerk! I don’t tolerate false teaching! If you don’t like it, you can leave!”

I’m not going anywhere. I have no intention of unfollowing, blocking, banning, or stuffing clay into my ears to silence your tyrannical pro-censorship opinions. I can handle the untruth because I know the truth. I am not tossed about by every doctrine I hear. Disagreement won’t send me scurrying for safety.

If I just left every dialogue that contained contrary points of view, I would be incapable of defending my beliefs. I’d be unable to form relationships with anyone who didn’t agree with me about everything. My faith would be nothing but a flimsy collection of unchallenged convictions. In other words, I would be just like you.

(1 Peter 3:15) “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.”
