Posted above an article about the Tennessee school shooting: “You are not pro life if you vote for NRA candidates – you don’t know Jesus – and you don’t deserve anything good in your life at all until you CARE ENOUGH TO VOTE TO STOP THIS!”
Congratulations! You have correctly explained that our laws should reflect the qualities of Jesus. Any law that ‘does not know Jesus’ is a bad law.
Recently, I came across this meme – “When my child hits another child with a stick, I don’t blame the stick, but I still take the stick away.” I responded with, “And now you want to gather up all the sticks in the rest of the country, right?”
That comment had amassed over 700 unhinged responses when I quit following the conversation. The responses were mostly general commentary about my ignorance and low I.Q. A few of them were straight up lies assuring me that, ‘nobody wants to take away all the sticks.’ And some of them were passionate pleas to give up some individual freedoms for the greater good of society.
Now, when you tell me that Jesus doesn’t approve of kids hitting other kids with sticks, I will agree. But when you tell me that Jesus wants the government to take away sticks from the kids who aren’t hitting anyone, you’ll need to show me that in the Bible. Show me chapter and verse that justifies pre-emptively punishing innocent stick owners on account of their neighbor’s stick abuse.
Laws are necessary things because not everyone submits to God’s authority. Some people hit others with sticks but that is not a good reason to forbid everyone from holding a stick. Tyranny is also what happens when people refuse to submit to God’s authority.
(Ephesians 6:10) Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
