Elon Musk bought Twitter and it’s sad that we care.

There are people living on the Earth who have never composed a Tweet. They have never been shadow banned. They don’t know how to ‘troll’ another person. Their political and religious views have never been published. Their well being is totally detached from the ‘responsible oversight of social media.’ Those people are happier, and more well adjusted than you and me.

We are emotionally affected by a billionaire’s acquisition of something that has famously brought us nothing but contention, divisiveness, and anxiety. Twitter is conversational mustard gas. Nobody gets healthier running through it.

Deep down, we know Twitter shouldn’t be this important to us but we just can’t seem to quit it. To deal with the guilt of our addiction, we’ve convinced ourselves that Twitter is the battlefield where we fight to preserve the first amendment. The problem is, freedom of speech matters more to us than speaking truth.

“John, you jerk! Freedom of speech is important! You sound like a fascist!”

Excellent! You should post that to Twitter.

When my purpose for social media is simply ‘making my voice heard,’ then it doesn’t matter how much Twitter is censored. My voice isn’t God’s voice. Mankind will get along just fine without knowing what I think of Florida’s Governor, immigration laws, unemployment, and trans-gender swimmers.

Those of you lamenting Elon Musk’s purchase are no better than me. You’re worried that Twitter might not continue to be a place where your views are privileged over mine. It’s time to grow-up and realize that you can’t know if your opinions are any good until you’ve heard from someone who opposes them.

Free speech is good. True speech is more important. We should be more concerned with telling the truth than with how many people are hearing what we say.

“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.”

(Romans 1:18)
