Shame.
I feel it.
I’m supposed to ‘engage’ my audience with ‘consistent content’ in order to ‘build a platform’. I’ve failed. FAILED!
I’ve been inconsistent. Sporadic even. My platform is more of a make-shift scaffolding.
Rickety and unreliable.
My fault. I can change. I will change!
“Ask questions to engage your readers.” That’s what they’re telling me to do. Ask questions.
Okay.
Dear reader, who was the first President of the United States?
“No! Not questions like that! Ask things that don’t have simple Yes or No answers!”
That’s what they’re telling me now.
Okay.
Dear reader, where did I put my car keys?
“No! Ask questions that spark debate and spirited discussion!”
They’re shouting at me now. (I guess I’m trying their patience…)
Okay.
Dear reader, what question would cause a spirited response from you?
Engage me!

People like to talk about themselves. Therefore, any question that is going to get people talking about themselves is the kind of question you need to ask. Unless it’s “What pets do you torture in your spare time?” That’s likely to get you committed.
So Jodi, what pets do you torture in your spare time?
I’m kidding!
Don’t limit your answer to just your spare time.
The only question I can think of that is liable to produce engagement is, “wanna git hitched?” Much depends on timing, tho.
Well said. I hadn’t considered that question.
Excellent comment.
It depends though – you want to make sure that you don’t ask more than one person this same question at the same time.. that could get confusing and end you up with no engagement at all.
