If you’re making excuses for behavior that is awful enough that you’re making excuses for it and one of those excuses is, “God made me this way,” then you better brace yourself. This is going to sting.
God made everybody. He made black, white, red, yellow, orange, purple, and all the other people colors. He made some people blind. Some people can’t hear. Some people are devout Christians. And some people hate Him. God made all the people who worship Him and all the folks who hate Him.
You can tell who the God haters are even if they don’t identify themselves. They are the people who lie, cheat, oppress, abuse, rape, steal, and murder. They molest children and beat-up women. They drive drunk and destroy lives. They use drugs with no regard for consequences. This is how people behave when they hate God. They do everything out of love for themselves.
Sometimes people who claim to love God behave just like the people who hate God. What do you say when you’re a Christian who lies, cheats, oppresses, abuses, rapes, steals and murders? I’ll give you one guess…
That’s right! You say, “God made me this way.”
Instead of saying, “The Devil made me do it,” you make God responsible for evil. You excuse your sin by blaming it on your Creator. Eventually, you’ll decide that your specific sin isn’t anything to worry about because God is love and He won’t give you anything you can’t handle. You’ll remove a couple of Bible verses from context so they’ll support your belief that God is pleased with you no matter how you behave. Then you will actually take PRIDE in your sin. At that point, you are indistinguishable from the pagans.
God set you apart from the animals by giving you a little bit of power to create yourself. Perhaps you’ve noticed that wombats don’t compose music or start businesses. That’s because God made wombats to be nothing more than wombats. There has never been a wombat with the personal goal of self-improvement. No wombat has ever sinned. If you’re reading this, you are not a wombat.
Next time you want to say, “God made me this way,” just say, “God made wombats.” That statement is equally relevant to your sin.
“Woe to them, because they have strayed from me! Destruction to them, because they have rebelled against me! I long to redeem them but they speak lies against me.”
(Hosea 7:13)
