Over here, W.G. Hulbert has written about his least favorite gospel account.

The Gospel of John is my least favorite gospel. There. I said it. I probably like Luke the best. Maybe Mark. But John? Meh.

I will admit I was surprised.

First, it’s heretical to even HAVE a least favorite gospel…isn’t it?

I mean…we’re supposed to be in love with the Bible.

All of it!

Every word of scripture is supposed to inspire us.

Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah the father of Eber. – Genesis 10:24

That feeds my soul – Praise the Lord!

Okay…I’ll drop the sarcasm.

It’s refreshing when Christians admit we play favorites.

Sometimes, “feeding on the Word of God” gives us indigestion.

I appreciate the blatant honesty in describing the Gospel of John with, “Meh.”

Taking my cue from the author – This was my favorite line in the article:

I say do it again, God. Drop your Spirit on our leaders who are completely out of touch with your will. Send them into a prophetic frenzy. I actually don’t know for sure what that is, but I’m convinced it would be a hoot.

It’s my favorite line because it upset me.

It made me think and I frequently get unsettled when that happens.

I’m not sure I would notice a prophetic frenzy if God dropped his Spirit on our leaders.

If the Spirit of God descended on America, I’m pretty sure I’d be one of the people swept up in the frenzy.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to be on the sidelines as an observer.

Munching popcorn and pumping my fist in the air: “Yay, God! Use those heathen for your glory!”

And that’s when I got upset.

Because I realized I’m more like Donald Trump than I am like Jesus.

Trump is boorish, crass, unkind, arrogant, selfish, and [insert your favorite Trump character flaws here].

Then the guy turns around and humbly admits he needs prayer “more than anyone in the room“.

I like to think I’m more righteous than Donald Trump.

Truth is, I’m just more careful with my Twitter feed.

I sanitize my speech so it isn’t obvious that I’m boorish, crass, unkind, arrogant and [insert every Trump character flaw].

The difference between me and Trump is – I’m better at hiding my horribleness.

So I agree with W.G. that we need God’s spirit to drop on us.

I’m just not sure how much I’ll enjoy the event.

    Ow…

  2. I love W. G.’s blog. I subscribed after you mentioned him in another blog. One of my favorite stories is the one where Saul goes to kill David and the Lord intervenes and causes him to stop his pursuit and begin praising God! Nothing is impossible with God. David was a “man after God’s own heart” and he was anointed to be the next king. I just wonder, knowing that government is appointed by God, do we need a “man after God’s own heart” to see a real move of God? Just thoughts to ponder… Also, I think the restraint that we show sometimes in our replies and our “tweets” does show some restraint of the Spirit. Thinking it and making it an action may be two separate things. Sometimes our flesh just thinks and then the Spirit gives us restraint. Your thoughts?

    1. I agree that the Spirit prompts us before we Tweet (or act) and we ought to be listening for those prompts. It’s tough to overcome our emotions and exercise humility. I’ve spoken too soon, many, many, many times. I can sympathize with the POTUS when he says stupid things. The hard part is letting God handle Trump when I’m feeling like I’m up to the task myself.
