Christianity Grunge Flag

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

1 Peter 1:15

I don’t like Christianity.

Not all of it, anyway.

There are good parts like the Son of God coming down from Heaven and taking the blame for every rotten thing I do. That part is great! I really like it!

But the other parts of Christianity are not as appealing. Honestly, they kind of suck. I’m required to admit that I do rotten things and deserve to be punished. I have to ASK for forgiveness. I have to APOLOGIZE for being awful.

I have to tell the truth, even when it makes me look bad. Christianity makes me be honest and that is terribly inconvenient. Honesty almost always costs me something whether it’s money, popularity, or relationships.

Christianity makes me share my stuff. I don’t want to share. I’m afraid that you’ll break my stuff if I let you use it. And I don’t want to share my time either. My faith forces me to prioritize your needs above my own and I don’t like that…at all.

Another thing I hate about Christianity is monogamy. I have to stick with the same spouse until one of us dies. I’m attracted to LOTS of women and it annoys me that my faith requires me to ignore my feelings.

Christianity often asks me to sacrifice and I don’t like that. I despise selflessness, especially when nobody notices my sacrifice. Christianity insists that I serve horrible, ungrateful people without any applause or praise.

Worst of all, Christianity requires that I worship God. I don’t want to worship God. I want to worship me. I want you to worship me too! Even though I know I don’t deserve your worship, I want it anyway and Christianity demands that I get rid of those evil desires.

I’ve heard people say they love being a Christian. Other than eternal life with God, there’s not much to love. But I will admit that life is a pretty big deal.

I’m not a Christian because the Christian lifestyle is appealing.

I’m a Christian because it’s the only available option that leads to life.

  1. Thank you for your blatant honesty. Your daily messages always make me smile and remind me to keep trying. (As does frequent doses of three little pigs…which my kids and I love probably more than we ought to)

  2. I Love it!! I Love it!! I love it!! I often tell my husband and my 13 kids, that being a Christian can just down right suck. It’s not fun to do all the right stuff. It’s not easy to do all the right stuff. But it’s right! Thanks for the words

    1. We are in agreement then. Thanks, Dawn and congratulations on finding time to write an entire paragraph while managing 13 kids!

  3. I hear you, Bro. I have to pray daily that God will have me love what He loves, hate what He hates and want what He wants. Thankful for the hope that He changes hearts, because I often desire a large helping of vomit when hunger strikes.

    1. Thanks for the comment, Chris. I too have desires that aren’t in my best interest. The challenge is not only to recognize them but to resist them too!
