Maybe it’s the pungent aroma of fireworks still hanging in the air. Perhaps my circadian rhythms have run amok. I don’t know what caused it but I woke up with an inexplicable optimism. A dangerous optimism in fact. An optimism so outrageously extreme that I actually believe I might get some thoughtful responses to this question:

Which Democratic candidate are you most excited about and why?

Bear in mind that I understand none of the Democrats are Donald Trump. You don’t need to explain that to me (again). I know that you would vote for Godzilla, or Walter White, or Satan over Donald Trump but that doesn’t answer my question. I want to know which Democrat you find most appealing based on their ideas.

Their ideas should be unique to the Democratic platform. This is important. Being against child abuse is not unique to the Democrats. Neither is anti-racism. We don’t need a Democrat in the Oval Office to turn public support away from school shootings. We already oppose bad things. Opposition to evil is something that all normal people have in common. Ethics aren’t defined by politics.

I don’t care about things like, gender, skin color, family history, or economic status either. So if you say, “I like Pete Buttigieg because he’s gay,” – I will dismiss your response immediately (after I laugh at you).

I’m hopeful that somebody, anybody, can offer a compelling reason to consider voting for a Democrat in 2020. I’m an open-minded person who is ALWAYS willing to hear different idealogical points of view. If you’ve been frustrated by the sheep mentality of Conservative Evangelicals, this is your chance to convert one. I’m not a Donald Trump fan boy. I can be persuaded to switch parties.

But before I switch, I need to know which Democrat deserves my support. So tell me which one has yours. I’m optimistic that you can do it.

  1. Based on the first debates I think they all want to lose badly, so I am underwhelmed about all of them. I really don’t like either political party that much but I’ve never seen a group of people so pandering and without any vision or purpose (other than impeach Trump and give illegal aliens free healthcare). You should be very optimistic…if you like Trump.

  2. I still support Pat Paulsen. In spite of being dead, he is still the best qualified candidate. In fact, being dead may be a big plus. He can’t enact anything stupid. (Hey, since dead people can vote, there’s no reason dead people can’t run for office.)

    1. I’m working on an article about the circumstances under which I would vote for a houseplant to be President. If there were no options other than the current slate of Democrats, I would not hesitate to write in a fern or philodendron.

  3. …you’re going to need to take back the part about not choosing a candidate based solely on race, gender, or sexual orientation.

“I like Pete Buttigieg because he’s gay,” is the only honest way for them to say it.

  4. I’ve always thought that it would be really interesting/improvement if our ballot literally was like “candidate a: policy positions” “candidate b: policy positions” a blind ballot listing no name, party, etc. just policy positions. It would eliminate the garbage and feel good ads and mud slinging.

    1. That would also eliminate the possibility of any of the current Democrats getting elected.
