When I mention Jiddu Krishnamurti you’ll be stricken with fear about how to pronounce his name. That’s ironic because he gave a lecture in 1984 that revealed how you can eliminate fear from your life. So I should have waited to mention his name until after you were given the secret to overcoming the terror of pronouncing it, but it’s too late now. You should stick around though because the secret to eliminating fear from your life is super easy (according to the guy whose name I don’t have the energy to type again).
“Stop being afraid of things.”
After walking you through a list of things you’re afraid of like losing your job, losing a loved one, or having to say “Krishnamurti” out loud, the man tells you to simply stop being scared. The reason you fear those things is that you keep thinking about them. Thinking is the root of your problem. The solution is to stop thinking.
I hear you say: “Wait. Aren’t we thinking right now? Didn’t he find this solution by thinking about the problem of thinking?”
I’m afraid you’re overthinking. No wonder you’re a wreck!
Listen, Jiddu can’t do EVERYTHING for you! You’re going to have to take some ownership in your own well being. If you’re unwilling or unable to do anything to help your self, maybe mystical-pop-psycho-quasi-spiritual-mumbo-jumbo isn’t right for you. You should think about Christianity.
Jesus told us (long before 1984) that worrying doesn’t solve any problems. He told us to look at the birds. They never worry about what to eat or what to wear or how to pronounce, “Krishnamurti.” But the message of Jesus was not ‘have bird brains.’ The message was ‘trust God to take care of you.’
For disciples of psycho-mumbo-jumbo, defeating fear is a willpower project. Refuse to contemplate the future. Avoid contingency plans. Decline to acknowledge that suffering could happen. The secret is managed denial of reality. That is a solid strategy right up until reality arrives.
Jesus said you’re going to have some bad days. He said you’ll get through them by trusting your heavenly Father. He tells you the storms are coming and proved that He is master of them. That’s a better solution than trying to stop believing in weather.
(Matthew 6:26) Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
