I’ve written about the problem of inserting adjectives in front of the word Christian.
And because of the amount of cultural influence that I wield – the problem persists.
Here’s a thing that was written by a person.
The person who wrote the thing is described as, “a progressive Christian writer and activist”.
Inside my brain, alarms go off whenever someone puts ‘progressive’ in front of Christian.
It seems only Christianity requires that modifier.
Nobody identifies as a progressive Muslim or a progressive Buddhist.
Christians like to attach the word progressive to their faith so they can say stuff that isn’t Christian.
Stuff like:
“You [Mike Pence] say we should not discriminate against Christianity. You are the worst representation of what it means to be a Christian. I am a Christian woman, and what I do know about Christianity is that we bear no prejudice, and everybody is welcome.”
Lady Gaga – Preaching progressive Christianity at her concert in Las Vegas
Mike Pence is “worst representation of what it means to be a Christian”?
That can’t be correct.
Some people claim Hitler was a Christian.
If that’s true, The Furor would certainly edge out Mike Pence for “worse representation”.
But that’s just an opinion.
Just like progressive Christianity!
Progressive Christians are guided by their whims and passions.
They have little regard for people who express ‘traditional’ Christianity.
People like Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ had a lot of opinions about Christianity.
Lady Gaga says, “… what I do know about Christianity is that we bear no prejudice, and everybody is welcome.”
Jesus says:
“If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! “
Jesus Christ being prejudiced that people are evil.
Jesus was prejudice.
He talked about people being “lost”, “evil”, “blind”, “wicked”, “rebellious”, and “stubborn”.
Jesus assumed people were generally bad.
He wasn’t impressed by anyone’s righteousness.
Then there’s this:
“Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'”
Jesus Christ contradicting the idea that everybody is welcome in Christianity.
The idea that Christianity “welcomes everybody” did not originate with Jesus.
In fact, Jesus said there are “many” who aren’t welcome.
So who’s right?
Do you think Lady Gaga understands Christian orthodoxy better than Jesus?
Do you think progressive Christianity would get a thumbs-up from the Messiah?

I pick Jesus. And here’s an adjective…trouble-making Jesus. Jesus, the master trouble-maker, major boat-rocker. Jesus is always bringing the theology of those who think they’re following Him into question. I think people confuse loving people where they are with thinking they’re okay where they are. He came to bring order from our chaos, not contribute to it.
A message I’ve seen repeated from multiple churches is: “It’s okay to not be okay.”
I disagree.
If it were okay to be not okay, Jesus wouldn’t have come to make things okay.
Turning victorious Christianity into anemic, powerless Christianity….which is not really Christianity.
I myself have used this phrase but it is not where I stop you can be not ok to begin with but there should be a change. I prefer when people say this is to say God loves you the way you are and loves you too much to let you stay that way.
I agree with the surface statement “anyone is welcome in Christianity”, but not to the extent that gaga takes it here. Anyone is certainly able and welcome to become a Christian, however that doesn’t mean that some things are gonna have to change first. Jesus won’t discriminate who he’ll let follow him based on lifestyle or sexuality, however, in order to truly follow him, one must “deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
Luke 9:23
This is a good response to the “progressive Christians” who make God in their image and consider Heaven is open to everyone. Jesus will separate the sheep from the goats. I would like to hear these folks define the difference.
Progressive Christianity sees no difference between sheep and goats.
