It has been suggested that gay people aren’t harming me so I should “worry about my own sin” and leave conviction to God. I’ve handled this particular criticism many times before so it won’t take long to respond.
If gay people “are not hurting me” by proclaiming their “pride” then I am not hurting them by proclaiming my “disdain.” Remember, sticks and stones can break bones but words don’t hurt you…unless you let them. If you’re so fragile that you can’t tolerate criticism of your unnatural sexuality, then don’t criticize me for exercising my right to free speech. My lifestyle isn’t hurting anyone.
But you aren’t concerned about me hurting “anyone.” You’re only concerned about yourself. When I light up the wretched rapists or child molesters, you’ll cheer me on. When I turn a spotlight on YOUR sin, I need to mind my own business and let the Holy Spirit do the convicting.
First, how do you know the Holy Spirit isn’t using me to convict you? I mean, agitation is a possible sign of conviction…
Second, it’s selfish to only concern yourself with sin that directly affects you. You would shriek loudly if I said, “Shut up about racism! It’s not hurting me.” Quit being a hypocrite. You don’t get to pick and choose which sins matter.
Finally, it DOES NOT harm sinners to confront them about their sin. Calling sinners out of sin is LOVING THEM. When you suggest that I’m the bad guy for warning people about what will kill them; YOU are the bad guy.
I’m a paramedic arriving at a crash site. You’re a bystander shouting, “Those people in the burning vehicle aren’t hurting anyone!”
Understand?
“For whoever finds me finds life
and receives favor from the Lord.
But whoever fails to find me harms himself;
all who hate me love death.”
Proverbs 8:36
