As I prepare myself to grumble about the triple digit temperature outside, I remember just a few weeks ago when I was grumbling about the insufferable cold. It occurred to me that I’ve got a very narrow ‘comfort zone.’

I’m not just fussy about the temperature either. I will complain when my stomach is empty for more than a minute or two. I gripe when my car breaks down. I’m upset about gas prices right now because $5 bucks per gallon is more than I want to pay. I’m not happy about the baby formula shortage either. My yard needs to be mowed (again). Plus, the government frustrates me daily.

My contentment is determined by momentary feelings. I forget every good blessing I’ve ever received the instant I bite my tongue or stub my toe. When anything is outside my razor-thin comfort zone, I testify that my whole life is a disaster.

And then I start to question God’s wisdom. I think the Universe would run better if He would listen to my suggestions. I genuinely believe that my vision for a better world is superior to that of the One who made the world. Essentially, I want a world that revolves around me. What could possibly go wrong with that?

Then I remember that Jesus died and rose again so that my stupidity, pride, and selfishness won’t lock me out of God’s family. Because of Christ, God doesn’t hold it against me when I forget to count my blessings and try to shove Him off His throne. That is a greater comfort than perfect weather and cheap gasoline.

(Psalm 32:1) “Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit.”
