Here’s a short video by three skeptics attempting to convince you that skepticism makes you smarter. All three of these guys are devout atheists and I agreed with almost everything they said…except for the premise that skepticism makes you smarter.
Bill Nye suggests that it’s difficult to change your worldview when presented with evidence that contradicts it. He is correct. All three of those dudes are living proof of that. They live in a world brimming with evidence for a Creator and remain stubbornly ‘skeptical’ of God’s existence.
Understand that I am a fan of skepticism. I use it every day. Liberally employing skepticism is how I filter out noise and find truth. It is good to have doubt when presented with new information. And it’s true that skepticism plays a part in critical thinking. The atheists have that part right.
However, the atheists are hypocrites. They are skeptical of everything except atheism. They mistake their sneering cynicism for thoughtfulness. If these guys were honest skeptics, they would make a 15 minute video casting doubt on the theory of evolution.
Skepticism should be your intellectual starting point; not the ending point. When you’re only capable of doubt, you’ll never discover reality. At some point, everyone puts faith in something; even the cynical atheists. Smart people know when to give up their skepticism.
“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.”
(Romans 1:21)
