I’ve noticed that you do not have a friend who loves you enough to shove his hand over your mouth and yell, “STOP TALKING!” That reality makes me sad. I’ll feel a little better if you would do me the favor of placing your hand over your mouth, pretend it’s my hand, and in your mind imagine me shouting – “STOP TALKING!” Please, leave your hand over your mouth for the remainder of this post.

You don’t talk about birds, clouds, or the stars as things that are part of “your sky.” You seem to understand that there is just one sky. Everything in “your sky” is in “my sky” even when I’m too far away to see it. How would you feel if, when you pointed at the moon, I nodded and said, “Thanks for sharing your sky!”

That’s how I feel when you talk about “your truth.”

You don’t have any truth and you don’t have any sky. The truth, like the sky, is singular. The truth isn’t scattered among billions of human minds. There is only one Truth (and it doesn’t belong to you.)

I don’t have any truth either. It doesn’t encourage me when you support me in “speaking my truth.” It tells me you don’t understand how to think. That makes me feel unsafe.

When His disciples asked Jesus for directions to get to God, Jesus uttered the famous phrase, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” That single statement not only answered the disciples’ question, but it confirms that there is no such thing as “your truth.” Christ didn’t say, I am “my truth.”

Though it pains me to contradict your theology, Jesus wasn’t, “hanging out downtown speaking his truth” as if Jesus’ truth is just one option among many. What Jesus claimed goes waaaaaaaay beyond merely “speaking truth.” Jesus claimed to BE truth. I’m going to try and explain why that’s a big deal.

In the first few verses of the book of John, we’re told, “Through [Jesus] all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” Jesus created everything. Put another way, Jesus is responsible for reality. And reality is anything that is true.

The apostle Paul tells us that Christ sustains reality through “the power of his word.” When Jesus claimed to be the Truth, he told you he is LITERALLY the reason that you experience reality. Every moment of your existence, both conscious and unconscious, is made possible by Jesus Christ.

See how silly you look when you blather about “your truth?”

Your truth has no power to affect reality. What you’re calling “your truth” is merely noise. Whenever you DO speak truth, it’s been copied from God. All truth belongs to God. Because He is good, God saw fit to equip us with the tools necessary to detect truth. But we can only discover Truth, we cannot create it.

If you promise to stop saying goofing things like, “Your truth is yours,” then you may now remove your hand from your mouth.

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.

  1. Thank YOU!!!! I am SO TIRED of that phrase!!! It’s either truth or not. And “your opinions & experience” may or not be truth!!! It’s not about you!!! Such a narcissistic, self absorbed society, even in the “Church” (“ “ b/c so many don’t speak Bible but wear the label.)
