My fellow rural dwellers, listen up!

Do you know why we suck?

Because we don’t live in New York!

The following post is long because it’s not a simple thing to unpack the concept of Midwestern crappy-ness.

This is probably just my narrow, close-minded fear talking…

…but that seems condescending.

People outside of New York exist for years without leaving the comfort zone of a narrow point of view.

To what ‘narrow point of view’ are you referring?

We aren’t writing derogatory posts about everyone who doesn’t live here.

It’s not broad-minded for a New Yorker to believe everyone who lives outside of New York is narrow.

[Living in New York] breeds philosophical thought and often even self awareness and a level of social intelligence.

Shucks.

Gol-dangit!

We country-folk can’t be all philosophical and intelligent on account of we’re surrounded by corn!

Apparently, living in New York also embues you with clairvoyance.

You can determine my motivation for choosing to dwell outside of the city.

I’m afraid of people who are different.

I “can’t hang” with all the diversity.

In my simple mind, I just thought I like not having to take a taxi to see a tree.

This post did teach me something, though.

I’m grateful for this knowledge:

…the masses, living in their tiny sheltered boxes, get to make decisions for us all.

I HAD NO IDEA WE HOLD THIS POWER!!

No wonder you’re upset.

Let me know what decisions I need to change in order to improve your quality of life.

It must be terrifying having your decisions made by morons who are too stupid to move to New York!

Imbeciles who aren’t forced to interact with different cultures, languages, body types, sexualities, income levels …

…except…hold on…

I DO interact with those people!

Yes! Yes! It’s true!

There are people right here in my tiny sheltered box who don’t look like me, act like me or think like me!

…isn’t that “diversity“?

I don’t live in New York so I’m not smart enough to know for sure.

And I’m too afraid to speak for myself.

This simple hayseed is desperate for your approval.

So when you get a chance…

…post something on Facebook and tell me you’re proud of me for figuring it out.

  1. “Even in the 13th largest city, I could go for… weeks without being around anyone who didn’t share my sexual or gender identity.” I suppose those of us living outside the big, important cities of the world should start wearing rainbow flags and LGBQT lapel pins, so you know we’re out here. Oy vey. What a schmuck.

  2. If I want to experience people different from me, all I have to do is go to – oh, the irony – Walmart!
Visited NYC a while back, really liked it, found the people as friendly, kind, helpful, and interesting as – oh, the irony – the people in my town!

    1. I enjoyed my visit to New York, too, McQ! Cool place!
But the more I read tripe like this from coast-dwellers, the more I’m convinced I’d never want to LIVE there (or Portland or LA). I’ll tour the historic areas and eat their food and take pictures. But that’s all I need. I don’t want to stay so long that I start believing I’m extra special just for being there…like it’s some type of accomplishment.

  3. To very loosely quote Auntie Em, in regard to all the ninnies who write such articles,
“For years, I’ve been dying to tell them what I thought of them! And now… well, being a Christian woman, I can’t say it! ”
Now I think I will go tip a cow and chew tobacco.
