Years ago, supporting someone required effort. Not anymore! I can take credit for being a ‘supportive ally’ by just posting stuff on social media. I can bask in lavish applause without taking a risk, breaking a sweat, or spending a dime. Hero status is available for nothing.

So…get ready to praise my greatness!

I support oppressed people.

I support the poor.

I support single moms.

I support education.

I support women’s rights.

I support fair wages.

What do I mean by ‘support?’ What a hateful question! I’m not required to explain myself to you. Just acknowledge that I’m a good person without judging me. Thank me for my bravery. Defend me when critics cast doubt on my sincerity. Idolize me!

It would make our civilization better if we the people stopped applauding everyone who claims to support things. But it doesn’t look like we the people are in any danger of developing the ability to think critically so I might as well benefit from our collective lack of discernment. You ought to support me.
