a domesticated yak with a saddle

This post might seem like it’s about trans-genderism to transgender advocates because EVERYTHING is about gender when you’re a trans-gender advocate. If, as you read this, you find yourself becoming agitated by the perceived abuse of LGBTQ+ people, then you are not understanding the point of this article.

In case you haven’t heard, J.K. Rowling (author of the ‘Harry Potter’ book series) has brought a tidal wave of hatred upon herself by suggesting that biological men are not women. Thousands of people have angrily proclaimed that they are no longer ‘fans.’ Those poor souls cannot grasp that a person can be ‘pro-women’ without being ‘anti-trans.’ This article is about THOSE people.

I understand being disappointed in idols. When the Wachowski brothers became the Wachowski sisters, I’ll admit I felt some loss. I’m a fan of The Matrix (especially the first one) and it stung a bit to learn that the brilliant creators of that series succumbed to a lie. But I didn’t renounce my appreciation for the fiction the Wachowskis created. Doing that would be childish.

A child is your fan until you say or do something that offends them. Children do not tolerate opposition. Somebody (I forgot who) once said, “If your child isn’t mad at you sometimes, you’re not a good parent.” If that sounds outrageous to you, then you’ve probably removed yourself from the Harry Potter fan club because J.K. Rowling said something you don’t like.

People who require complete allegiance to their personal ideology spend half of their time unhappy (and half of their time asleep). Don’t take my word for it, though. Listen to the people who are throwing away something they claim to cherish because they can’t abide J.K. Rowling’s views about gender. Rowling is an outspoken advocate of gay and lesbian rights but that’s not enough for some ‘fans.’ Such is the nature of ‘fandom.’

A fan is someone who appreciates you for ONE thing. They love your music, writing, painting, athleticism, commentary, cooking, or whatever. It is a mistake to think of ‘fans’ as ‘friends.’ Fans will cease to love you when you disappoint them. Fans only stick around when you give them what they want.

Are you a friend or a fan? If you’re cutting ‘toxic people’ out of your life more often than you’re arguing with ‘stubborn idiots,’ then you’re a fan. Friends tolerate disagreement. Fans do not. If you’re a ‘fan’ in your relationships, then you don’t have any friends.

“All a man’s ways seem right to him, but the Lord weighs the heart.”
