The debate rages on about the “reason for the season” at Christmas.

This year, The Church of The Perpetually Offended is banning everything from nativity scenes to creepy songs about weather related entrapment schemes.

This is what happens when outrage isn’t organized properly.

You’ll end up missing the most offensive thing about Christmas.

Jesus!

The birth of Christ is God’s unmistakable verdict on the condition of mankind.

Despite all the chatter – We aren’t bent toward “peace on Earth” or “goodwill”.

Jesus is the result of our relentless rejection of God’s desire that we be holy.

Hand in hand with “Joy To The World” is the shame of our wickedness.

And we Christians don’t talk about that any more.

We’re busy asserting our right to free speech.

We’re petitioning for a manger on the courthouse lawn.

We’re upset about the color of coffee cups.

But when we have the opportunity to be GENUINELY offensive – It’s Silent Night.

We won’t tell anyone they’re a sinner.

We won’t even use that word anymore.

It’s divisive.

It’s judgmental.

Instead of “sin” we say, “broken”.

That makes wickedness a circumstance beyond our control.

It’s not my fault…I’m just broken.

And God accepts me as I am.

Except…no.

Because Jesus.

He’s the gift nobody wanted.

He reminds us that we’re ugly, selfish, wretched creatures.

He reminds us that we are unworthy of God’s attention let alone affection.

Nobody wants to remember that, especially at Christmas.

The reason there’s a baby in the manger on your Christmas cards is because you’re a vile sinner.

Merry Christmas!

  1. The reason there’s a baby in the manger on your Christmas cards is because there were no atheists at the Nativity to eat him.
