I don’t want to start a daily devotional but what I want isn’t important. If I only did what I want to do, you wouldn’t be reading this because it wouldn’t exist. Instead of crafting this clever article, I would be back in bed having eaten a half-gallon of ice cream for breakfast. It’s not a good use of my time to do what I want to do. So I’m trying to spend my time doing what I ought to do.

What I ought to do is push my religious views on everyone.

Of course, there are some people who disagree. They believe my religion is a private matter that I should keep to myself. “It’s not right to force your opinions on others,” they tell me even when I didn’t ask for their opinion.

The reason I’m doing a devotional even though I don’t want to is: I generally despise devotionals. There are a few exceptions but the vast majority of devotionals are insipid and banal. They’re chock full of hackneyed Christian clichés and totally bereft of insight. Most of the time when I finish reading a devotion I think, “Gosh. I could have written something better than that.”

Then I think, “Well, why don’t you write something better than that?”

Then I think, “Because I don’t want to and I need to finish this half-gallon of ice cream.”

I can’t ignore my conscience anymore. I’m calling the series, “Daily Deuce.” Each devotion is short enough that you can hear the whole thing while you’re seated in the bathroom. It’s America’s #2 Devotional.

For the moment, Daily Deuce is going to be published with my other podcast, “The Comedy Sojourn.” If you’re already listening to Comedy Sojourn, you’ll be able to hear (or ignore) Daily Deuce without doing anything! If you don’t currently listen to my podcast, it is available is LOTS of different places. You can search for it wherever you listen to podcasts but if you can’t find it, here are several places to find it.

  1. Hi John,

    I wanted to let you know that:
    1. I listen to each episode of the Comedy Sojourn Podcast;
    2. My wife graduated from Hayworth High School in Kokomo (class of 1973);
    3. DD EP87 of America’s #2 Devotional for Tuesday,April 13, 2021, was missing and/or unavailable on Apple Podcasts.(Then, I thought, “Maybe John is just testing us to determine how many podcast listeners are obsessively compulsive enough to notice a missing episode.” Then, I stopped thinking.)

    This podcast is wonderful, funny, and easy to listen to, especially the newly restructured (and shorter) recent episodes.

    Love it! Love it! Love it!

    1. Thanks!
      I botched posting DD Ep87. So it wasn’t a clever test. It was just incompetence.
      I sincerely appreciate your noticing though. It’s encouraging to know somebody cares!
