During the Christmas season it is good to think about God’s unwavering justice. In order to achieve justice, God unleashes wrath. Let’s not forget that Jesus came to Earth, in the form of a newborn babe, meek and mild, to perish on a cross because of us.
All year long, ungodly rebels like to tell me that God is ‘vengeful, angry, and violent.’ In the spirit of the season, I want to thank them for this important reminder. Amid the relentless wishes for ‘good cheer’ and ‘great joy’ and ‘peace on Earth’ I sometimes forget that God is a perfect judge. Nobody is qualified to pass judgment on The Lord. Humans are the original aggressors, not God.
Justice would be Jesus never being born. Mankind does not deserve God’s grace. It is a mistake to think Jesus’ birth was a sign of God’s approval. That baby in the manger is proof of your wickedness. Your sin is the ‘reason for the season.’
It is Jesus who stands between you and the wrath of God. Christmas is the time of year when the whole world proclaims their wretchedness and wise men seek a Savior.
(Nahum 1:2) The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;
the Lord takes vengeance and is filled with wrath.
The Lord takes vengeance on his foes
and maintains his wrath against his enemies.
