Kidnappers, thieves, rapists and murderers…
…I’m just like you!
That’s what I’m supposed to say.
Nobody’s perfect.
I’ve got to lose my self righteousness.
Gotta stop acting child abuse is worse than coffee addiction.
I’ve got issues too!
(“Issues” are what religious bigots call “sin”.)
And when I don’t acknowledge my own issues…
…I’m “driving people away from Jesus”
DRIVING THEM!
Like cattle.
Or maybe like on a bus…?
“Sinners ALL ABOARD!”
“Next stop, far away from Jesus!”
…anyway…
The point is that these
hapless souls, searching for acceptance and peace,
wanting to fall at the feet of Jesus,
are instead, lassoed by my lariat of intolerance,
and herded into hell.
So I’m told anyway.
By many, many, many, people who are
perfect examples of Christ’s humility
because they just love everyone with
pious, deliberate blindness to issues.
(Again, for you bigots…”sins”.)
Focus on my own issues.
That’s how the pros do it.
Let the horror of their dark past testify to the redemptive power of Christ!
So that’s what I’m gonna do.
You rapists listen up,
I cheated on a biology quiz in 7th grade!
You pedophiles hear me out,
Sometimes I eat without saying grace.
You killed your spouse?
I’m impatient at other drivers on the road!
And if God can forgive a guy like me…
…you sex traffickers are in the clear!

While I can understand your point of view, I disagree. From a legal standpoint (that is, based on laws that society has in place), rapists are far worse than someone who cheated on a biology quiz in 7th grade. However, from a biblical standpoint, sin is sin, no matter how you look at it. If you live your entire life without ever doing anything worse than cheating on a test (a prospect I find doubtful at best), but never make a decision to follow Christ, you’re still going to Hell. That being said, if you’re a serial rapist, and you lived the majority of your life victimizing others, but ultimately choose to follow Christ, then you’ll go to heaven. Christ doesn’t care about the “size” of the sin – all sin prevents us from having a relationship with Him – He cares about whether or not we will repent from that sin. I know this is example is a bit simplistic, but I feel it is applicable to your post.
We do not disagree.
