Christmas is upon us!

The yuletide season, for me, is full of traditional activities.

  • Baking cookies
  • Shopping for gifts
  • Assuring myself it’s okay to tell kids that Santa is real because they’re young and will eventually figure it out and understand the deception was just harmless fun.

Assuming that your kids will “figure out the Santa scam” is risky.

The truth about Santa Claus requires critical thinking and there are no guarantees your kid will ever do that.

Your kid might believe whatever she’s told for the rest of her life.

Lots of kids do that.

When a person prefers imagination to contemplation, anything is possible!

Santa Claus is real.

There are more than 2 genders.

Ice melts because Global Warming is real.

The universe came from nothing.

The Earth is flat.

People who oppose abortion hate women.

Your skin color matters more than anything.

Rich people are evil.

Government can be compassionate.

...and even unicorns.

Genuine belief in Santa can lead to a lifetime of childlike wonder.

Youthful ignorance is a great foundation for adult delusions.

“Open mindedness” is a feast for people who swallow every idea they’re fed.

So, what’s the harm in letting kids believe in Santa Claus?

Nothing…as long as you’re teaching them that every day isn’t Christmas.

  1. Furthermore, if you tell your kids that Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy are real and then they find out that you’ve lied to them about these things, what conclusion are they likely to come to when you tell them “But, seriously, Jesus is real”. I’d rather just stick to the truth, tell them about Jesus and strengthen their faith in him, rather than give them reason to distrust me because of the deliberate lies told to them, just to make things “magical”.

  2. “The truth about Santa Claus requires critical thinking and there are no guarantees your kid will ever do that.”

Important point. Kids that are never allowed to think through the Santa issue not only may never become critical thinkers but are at risk of being duped into atheism through vacuous and fallacious argumentation. Not only would that lead to wasting their lives embracing an incoherent worldview, they’d be on the naughty list. 🙂
