Wallpaper was on sale at the home improvement store so I bought a dozens rolls of the invisible kind. It is perfect in my den! I really like the color of the walls and I didn’t want the wallpaper to overpower the room. I’m super happy with the results. I put it up in a few hours and the difference isn’t even noticeable!
It’s kind of like most people’s religion!
In the United States, the most popular religions don’t require us to make drastic changes. We think we’re pretty good people. Since we’re not broke, we don’t need fixing. We’ve had it hammered into our heads that God loves us just the way we are. Who can blame Him? We’re awesome!
We’re such amazing and beautiful people that it would be a tragedy to change anything about us. Any modifications are a denial of our “true selves.” There is no room for improvement. Religion is merely an expression of the goodness that already exists within us.
Christianity would be a terrible religious choice if we took it straight out of the Bible. The scripture doesn’t mention our virtues. Instead, it dwells almost entirely on our depravity and wickedness. Fortunately, there are a couple of verses that talk about how much God loves us. Instead of correctly understanding those verses as testimonies about God’s goodness, we think they mean we’re lovable.
Then, we ignore all that Bible stuff about denying ourselves, repenting of sins, and picking up a cross. Doing those things would change us into something else. And we like ourselves too much for that.
So, let’s slap up a roll of invisible wallpaper and call it, “Christianity.” The religious veneer doesn’t make any difference in how we walk, talk, think, or live but for some reason, we’re comforted to know it’s there.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”
2 Corinthians 5:17
