a domesticated yak with a saddle

These days, nobody takes atheists seriously. Excluded from all relevant conversations, the non-believers are mostly relegated to tossing silly memes into social media streams. There are no parades for atheists. The atheists don’t get ‘Godless Lives Matter’ campaigns. The most marginalized people in our country are the people who pretend they don’t believe God exists.

Earlier this year I found a nest sitting over the window of my neighbor’s house. I immediately called an atheist and pleaded with her to come over and take a look. I knew it would make her happy to give me her point of view.

“A bird built a nest over that window,” I said.

She smirked and asked, “Who made the bird?”

Boy, did I feel stupid! Only an idiot would accept birds as a sufficient explanation for the existence of bird nests.

Wait a second…I’ve got that backwards. I meant to say, only an idiot thinks the origins of the bird are necessary to explain the existence of the bird’s nest. (Incidentally, this is why nobody takes atheists seriously.)

(Colossians 1:16) “For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

Tell an atheist that Jesus made the world and holds everything together and she will ask, “Who made Jesus?” Try to answer, and she will ignore you. She doesn’t want answers because then she’ll be forced to change the way she lives. She keeps reality limited to the things she personally comprehends and that’s another reason that nobody pays attention to atheists anymore.

Atheists believe that God owes them an explanation for his existence. God is supposed to give them an unabridged, scientifically robust thesis on His origins before they give Him any credit for putting life into their flesh. It’s like shouting, “Explain yourself!” at the bird sitting in a nest.

The thing is, God DID explain Himself. He littered the universe with evidence of His power and mercy. He speaks through nature and the scripture. Rather than worship God, an atheist gives credit to ‘instinct’ for teaching birds how to make nests. Instinct is the atheist’s ‘invisible Sky Fairy.’

There’s a spider web hanging over my back door. As a gesture of good-will and friendship, I’m going to let my atheist pal come over and ask, “Who made the spider?” It will make her feel smart for a minute or two and that’s all she’s ever going to get from atheism.

  1. Nobody needs to listen to atheists anymore because they own every aspect of American culture: the government, the media, public education, entertainment, corporate America.

Christians need to learn an old Greek word: paideia. The Catholics use the English word, “formation,” instead of paideia.

The atheist paideia has been taught in American classrooms for over a century. Everyone, even Christians are polluted with the atheist paideia because it is everywhere. We swim in it, breath it, compose our thinking by it.

I noticed this when I started teaching at a Catholic classical high school. A classical school is what education was before atheist and Progressive John Dewey recreated American public education.

I am curing myself of the atheist paideia by studying Plato and Aristotle until I see the world through their eyes. And I take advantage of the spiritual lifestyle that forms the foundation of the classical school. Instead of swimming in atheism all day long, students and staff swim in the Christian religion all day long. We go to Mass, pray, sit in quiet adoration of Jesus Christ.

The classic education is not job training or college prep. It is training to be a fully actualized human being. Education as job training and college prep is what atheists do. It’s what most of us have always done and what we have always done to our children.

    1. We’re on the same team, my friend.
Brainwashing our kids with the truth of God’s word. Atheism, which pretends to be a non-belief, has poisoned the beliefs of the most Western Christians. The only way to get rid of it is total separation from that education system.

  2. From the parent of an “atheist” who has walked away from God… The frustration of listening to him expecting me to prove to him that God not only exists, but deserves his love is amazing. He does it simply for the opportunity to disprove anything I may say and to make it sound foolish even to me once he’s twisted my words. There will always be an answer to everything and even when it is folly, it sounds completely logical and fully explained in his mind. Prayer can only go so far. It is up to God to reach him and it is up to him to listen.

  3. I would get tired of making up all those answers. Freedom from foolishness is what I have with my Creator, My Heavenly Father, my Comforter and my Redeemer. Birds are a small part of creation that makes me stop in amazement at the finiteness of this little bird and the placement of each feather and the way they construct their homes and raise their families.
