DISCLAIMER: I identify as a “white, cis-gender male” and therefore, my life is problem free. I know that my opinions are undeserving of any attention and this simple act of self expression will cause harm to marginalized people. If you are a member of ANY oppressed people group, you should ignore my self-centered rant.
I’ll never be able to wrap my head around the concept of a ‘black person who looks white.’ That’s because it is an incoherent concept. It’s what crazy people think. And I’m doing everything in my privileged power to avoid becoming a crazy person.
I assume white people, look white. Black people, look black. Brown people, look brown. I know it’s a simplistic system but it’s a key element in maintaining sanity. The alternative method (suggested by people like Miriam Zinter) prohibits me from knowing anything about the skin tone of people standing right in front of me. Which is crazy.
Zinter and other proponents of craziness, have changed the meaning of ‘black’ and ‘white’ because they love to be divisive. She defines her parents as ‘black’ because they have dark skin. But she defines herself as ‘black’ based on parent’s skin tone, not her own. Then, she writes an article for HuffPo scolding people for not knowing that she determines ethnicity using two different methods.
I can’t tell how a person thinks by looking at their skin color. ‘White’ isn’t a philosophical position. ‘Black’ isn’t an ideology. You’ve probably heard the term ‘gaslighting’ tossed around. A textbook example of gaslighting is a woman who ‘looks white’ demanding that you believe she’s black.
Racists are people who look solely at pigmentation to determine the value of other human beings. They are foolish, pathetic creatures who should be ignored; no matter their skin color.
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
(1 Samuel 16:7)
