Yes! Yes! Yes! and Yes!
A thousand times – Yes!
To be perfectly clear…
YES.
Racists are everywhere.
Prejudice thrives in the warm, dark, and damp environment of stupidity.
Unless you live on the moon, you will encounter dim-witted racists.
Racists live among us and some of them are on television.
They’re an arrogant bunch who say things like:
“[White privilege] is not an indictment of an individual; it’s just an observation of a social structure. It doesn’t mean that as a white person that you should feel guilt, or shame, or some kind of blame. It just means that there is a structure in our society that reflects a racial injustice.”
Then, in the very next instant, they’ll say:
So, what can people on both sides of privilege do to help combat the “white privilege” problem?
You’re not supposed to catch on to the contradiction.
White privilege IS NOT an indictment.
White privilege IS NOT something that should make you feel guilty, or ashamed.
White privilege IS NOT something for which you should accept blame.
Yet…white privilege IS a “problem” that you should help combat.
Racists think you’re dumb.
Racists think your skin color makes you weak.
Racists think you can’t succeed unless white people allow it.
Racists think you need white people to speak for you.
Racists see you as a different species.
Yes. Racists are everywhere.
You won’t be able to avoid them.
But you don’t need to give them special privileges.
