For the record, the way I write is the way I think. This blog is a transcript of the voice inside my head. Have you ever been offended by my writing? Imagine what it’s like to be me! I’ve got this stuff running through my head constantly. Sarcastic, offensive ideas bounce around in my skull all day until eventually, I fall asleep. Then, I dream in sarcasm (and color).
When I wrote about the problem with mindlessly voting for political candidates because of party loyalty, I was sincere. It’s quite stupid (I know…the word “stupid” offends me too but that’s how the voice in my head talks…) to elect Democrats simply because your great-grandfather, grandfather, father, and 2nd cousin-twice-removed always voted Democrat.
A chap on Facebook, who was having some big, big, big feelings, made the following comment.
“I don’t vote by party. Yes, they have us over a barrel. The GOP is to the left of where the democrats were during Clinton, and the democrats are bat shit crazy communists….so, John Branyan, what is a Christian to do? Vote for the lesser of two evils, again, and again, and again?
Great question! Here’s my answer: Yes.
Elections have ALWAYS been about choosing the lesser of two evils. Jesus Christ is never on the ballot. If he were, we could choose between good and evil. Christians are supposed to understand this concept. You shouldn’t be shocked to learn that every elected official is evil. That’s kind of a theme in the Bible.
” …for we have already charged that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin,”
Romans 9:3
So given the fact that we’ll be choosing between two evils, let me ask your question back to you:
“So, guy on Facebook who claims to be Christian, what are you going to do? Vote for the greater of two evils because of party loyalty?”
The answer is so obvious that I’m suspicious of your sincerity. I think you’re pretending to be conflicted. You’re feigning that your Christian faith won’t let you vote for any candidate. Then you’re voting Democrat. Right?
You voted for Obama. You voted for Hillary. You seize every opportunity to vote Democrat and justify it by proclaiming there’s “no difference” between the two. The GOP is “just as bad” as the Democrats.
On the off-chance that you REALLY believe the two parties are equally depraved, I’ll offer a few bullet points to highlight some differences. Currently, the Democratic party is campaigning on these ideas:
- women should be able to murder their children before they’re born
- men who claim to be women should be able to have abortions
- anyone should be able to live in the United States without legal documentation
- tax paying citizens should provide healthcare to people living here illegally
- you should pay for other people’s college education – even if you already payed for your own
- socialism, which has destroyed every nation that tried it, will be good for the United States
It annoys me that I’m required to say this: “The GOP is not perfect. There are bad Republican policies too.” It’s annoying because I already explained the choice is always between 2 evils but you forgot about that while you were reading the list of stupid Democratic ideas. Rather than admit that Democrats have lost their minds, you’re going to make believe they’re just like the Republicans.
The link to Facebook is below. Reading all the comments in context should enlighten anyone who remains genuinely conflicted on this point. Ranting about the evil Republicans is flimsy posturing. Christians can’t justify voting for Democrats on the basis of Democratic policies. Voting for Democrats on the excuse that there’s no difference between policies is either stupid or evil.
UPDATE: Instead of admitting that his comments were inappropriate, the person I quoted on Facebook has deleted the entire conversation. I’m leaving the link at the bottom of this article but you’ll not be able to see the original quotes.
After deleting his public comments, the guy bravely sent private messages under the mistaken belief that he would not be held accountable for those messages. Amanda took screen shots of her exchange and I’m posting them below.
I will always stand behind my comments. When I am wrong, I will own my errors. Deleting comments is the height of cowardice. I have a zero-tolerance policy for cowards.

Wow this guy is really smart! Imagine trying to dispute this blog post about how justifying voting for the greater evil is ok because the two parties really aren’t that different by literally saying that you just “exposed how the GOP is just as evil as the DNC”
Anyone wrestling with the “lesser of two evils” should watch the YouTube video by Rev. Cary Gordon. It is called “On Voting for the Lesser of Two Evils”.
